Kunekune pigs

At Drip Spring Hollow Farm, we also raise Kunekune pigs, a heritage breed known for their gentle temperament, excellent foraging ability, and suitability for pasture- and forest-based systems.

Kunekune pigs originated in New Zealand, where they were traditionally kept by the Māori people. The name Kunekune comes from the Māori language and means “fat and round,” a reflection of the breed’s compact build and efficient ability to thrive on forage. Unlike many commercial pig breeds, Kunekunes were historically raised with minimal grain, relying heavily on grasses, roots, grubs, and natural vegetation.

One of the most recognizable features of Kunekune pigs is their short snout and calm demeanor, which results in less aggressive rooting compared to other breeds. This makes them especially well suited for managed grazing systems where soil health and pasture preservation are a priority. They are also known for being docile, social, and easy to handle.

Historically valued for both meat and lard, Kunekune pork is well-marbled and flavorful. Like many heritage breeds, Kunekunes became rare as modern agriculture shifted toward faster-growing commercial pigs. Today, they are being preserved by small farms that value sustainability, animal welfare, and genetic diversity.

On our farm, Kunekune pigs are raised in a natural environment, where they are allowed to graze, forage, and express normal pig behaviors. This approach aligns with our commitment to production animal welfare and supports both the physical and psychological health of the animals.

By raising Kunekune pigs, we are proud to help preserve a unique heritage breed while producing high-quality pork through responsible, land-conscious farming practices.
